RHODES OLD TOWN AND GREEK SUNSETS

Two faves from my most recent trip, Rhodes Old Town and Greek sunsets. But I’m skipping ahead of myself. I woke up to this view from my hotel suite…

…in October! So, obviously, I head straight for the beach…

No crowds in sight, perfect. I’ve actually lost a bit of love for sunbathing in the past couple of years though. I can’t sit still when I’m somewhere new, I need to get out and explore. But never without dipping my toes in the water first. If you’re beside the sea, it’s completely obligatory, even in winter.

I had new shoes to break in too, so off I went to check out the local tourist tat (my FAVE!).

I ended up with a postcard and stamp for Tropical Popical (get your nails done and check out their postcard wall if you’re in Dublin) that I forgot to send, a Greek flag, an anklet and 30c water. I could’ve bought a toy gun, fake Chanel tote and the kitchen sink too, should I have been so inclined. Those shops are so random and I adore them for it.

Back at the hotel, I cooled off with a Mykonos before catching up with the rest of the gang.

The indoor domed pool area of Rodos Palace is a bit snazzy, but if I don’t have the patience to sunbathe outdoors, I’m certainly not about to start trying it sheltered.

Cleaned up and ready to go chasing Greek sunsets, we set off for Kallithea Springs, joined by TUI rep Daniela who’s lived on the island for 8 summers.

The thermal springs have been around since Ancient Greece times, but the building at Kallithea Springs is under 100 years old. I can only describe the pebble stone mosaic floors as a kind of marble carpet, it covers the entire ground and it’s incredible! Especially if you #havethisthingwithfloors. You’ll pay €3 in and can chill out under the straw umbrellas and swim in the rocky bay all day. Or grab sundowners in the café and stay ’til late.

Obviously, we saw it for the Kodak moment that it was. Perfect.

Ready for a glass of Greek wine, we moved on to Rhodes Old Town.

The Baklava is as fresh as it gets, direct from the houses of the locals in the tiny cobbled streets of the walled old town.

…and with the old town comes sweet little old people. This lovely lady chatted away in Greek to us while holding onto my arm, but was a bit camera shy. We think the said she’d hurt her back and had to use a walking stick and that me and my new pal Morris would make lovely babies. We think 😂!!

Wanting to browse through all the trinkets and souvenirs in the shops and stalls, but overruled by rumbling bellies, we decided on this romantic looking taverna and let Daniela do the ordering.

“Don’t order the Greek plate”, she says, “if you’re looking for an authentic meal”. Instead, she orders a variety of meze to share. Souvlaki, saganaki (fried cheese), meatballs, octopus, kokokythokeftedes (courgette fritters) and of course Greek salad, bread and olives.

The little glass is for wine and the big one is Ouzo….yamas! Except an anise flavoured spirit that turns milky white when you pour it over ice is not my idea of a nice aperitif. I stuck to carafe(s) of white wine.

Trying my hardest to twist everyone’s arms into going out for a few post-dinner drinks, I eventually admit defeat. The compromise was a nightcap back at the hotel, which eventually led to 4 more and probably a much later night than if we’d hit the town. But it was a much needed bonding sesh and rounded off our day of Rhodes Old Town and Greek sunsets perfectly.

October really was a great time to visit, but I think we might have got lucky with the weather. For better chances of sun, Falcon Holidays (part of the TUI Group) run holidays to Rhodes from May all summer long on falconholidays.ie (I’ve just spotted a week for around €400pp including flights at the beginning of the season!).

I travelled to Greece as a guest of Falcon Holidays which is part of the TUI Group and the Greek National Tourism Organisation. All view are, now and always, my own. This post was not sponsored.
